1. Use Sunscreen:
Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen, recommended SPF 50 to all exposed skin, including your face, neck, arms, and legs. Reapply every couple of hours when you’re out and about, or more often if swimming or sweating. It sounds obvious, but don’t forget to apply sunscreen to often-overlooked areas like your ears, the back of your neck and legs, and the tops of your feet.
2. Seek Shade:
It’s a good idea to seek some shade whenever possible, especially during the sun’s peak hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Shade provides additional protection from the sun’s harmful UV rays and can help cool you down on a hot summers day.
3. Wear Protective Clothing:
Opt for lightweight, long-sleeved shirts, pants, and wide-brimmed hats when you can, particularly on long walks or when you’re in the sun for extended periods of time to cover as much skin as possible. Clothing with UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) is great for added sun protection.
4. Sunglasses:
It’s essential to wear sunglasses that provide 100% UVA and UVB protection to shield your eyes and the delicate skin around them from sun damage. We know they look good, but sunnies are more than just a fashion accessory in Australia. Wearing sunglasses throughout summer can also help prevent cataracts and other eye conditions.
5. Stay Hydrated:
Drinking plenty of water keeps your skin hydrated from the inside out. Dehydration can cause your skin to be more susceptible to damage from the sun, so staying hydrated throughout summer is really important for good skin. You should consider using a hydrating skincare product to lock in moisture.
It’s important to remember that sun protection is not only about preventing your skin from sunburn, but also about safeguarding your skin’s long-term health and preventing premature aging. Share your summer pics with us on our TeenCo socials, make sure to tag us!
